The first rule of the search engines is don't be over concerned because the most rewarding return on your marketing dollar is the direct marketing to your target audience! This is not to say that the search engines are no good and not to bother, they need to be part of your campaign, not your whole campaign.

What most people don't understand is that search engine rankings are not a random listing.  It is actually a competition between sites depending on many factors the search engine software checks each month (and the monthly rule changes).  To get a better feel for how severe the competition is we will use the number one search engine as an example. If you go to Google.com and type in any search term, right under the Google logo® there is a blue bar that tells you how many web pages are in competition for those first 10 listings. And it gets worse everyday with over 40,000 new web sites being registered!  Waiting to compete just costs you more and more down the road!

There are over 2,500+ usable search engines at any given time online, only about 10 to 15 are popular enough to worry about because the top 15 deliver over 93% of search engine traffic and many of the smaller search engines get their searchable database from the popular ones anyway!  There is no worldly way to build a single web page to rank at the top of all of these search engines because each search engine has it's own ranking rules! So if you do not belong to a community of web sites, then you will require a resource collection.

Any company or companies that charge you for monthly search engine submissions are not doing you any favors because if they put the proper language in when they build or take over your web site, it should be automatically talk to the search engines each month.  Plus that, if you are overloaded with keywords, (more than 20 on some engines), or submit your web site improperly, some search engines will actually "Blackball" your web site for what they call "Trying to Spam the Search Engines".

The answer is to build a great site and then become part of a popular community of sites as the best avenue to promote it! There are many other ways to promote your web site  that work, but with a great foundation geared toward a community type plan to begin with, it won't be long before you can afford some other promotions that cost an awful lot more, (and some of those are worth it later when you have the right information).

It appears that yes the "Buying Public" is utilizing the Internet, and those who are retired or close to retirement are using the information highway to plan re-locations, travel, online purchasing and other information searches!  The Internet is bringing your target audience online...  are you there to receive them?  Also, again by reviewing the above table, no matter what our own favorite search engine is, it would make sense to have a business presence where the crowd is... Right?
